UN working group finds programmer Niu Tengyu’s detention arbitrary

Điều hướng đã dịch · bản biên tập tiếng Anh

A 2026 opinion by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found Niu Tengyu’s imprisonment violated rights to liberty, fair trial and expression, and called for release and reparations.

Vì sao quan trọng

The case includes a formal UN opinion, allowing claims by family and advocates to be assessed separately from an international legal finding.

Báo cáo đầy đủ

Chinese Human Rights Defenders published an account on July 30, 2026 of a UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention opinion concerning Niu Tengyu. The working group found his imprisonment arbitrary and called for immediate release, compensation and other remedies.

In 2020, a Guangdong court imposed a combined 14-year sentence for offenses including “picking quarrels,” violating personal information and illegal business activity. Family members and advocates have also made serious allegations of torture, restricted legal access and blocked appeals.

Those treatment allegations should not be treated as established solely on one organization’s account. This record separates the UN opinion, court information, family claims and any government response, with updates when new verifiable material emerges.
