Draft Lawyers Law amendments raise concerns over independent legal practice

Isinaling nabigasyon · editoryal na edisyon sa Ingles

Draft Lawyers Law amendments published in June 2026 add requirements concerning support for Communist Party leadership. Rights groups say this may further constrain lawyers in sensitive cases.

Bakit mahalaga

Lawyers’ ability to act independently directly affects fair-trial rights, investigation of torture claims and access to remedy.

Buong ulat

China’s National People’s Congress published draft amendments to the Lawyers Law in June 2026. Chinese Human Rights Defenders later argued that political requirements in the draft could increase institutional pressure on law firms and lawyers.

Lawyers interviewed by the organization also described blocked license transfers, pressure on firms, dissolved online groups and repercussions for families. These are interview accounts that require comparison with administrative decisions, public documents and independent evidence.

This record will track legislative review, final text and implementation. Draft language is not described as law already in force.
