CIVICUS interviews exiled activist on Joshua Wong: turning 30 in prison this month, due for release in January 2027 but facing a new national security charge
(Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation)政策与倡导经理。 The global civil society alliance CIVICUS has published an interview with Frances Hui, an exiled Hong Kong activist who is policy and advocacy manager at the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation. The interview takes Joshua Wong's case as its entry point: Wong co-founded the student group Scholarism at 14 and led the 2012 movement against the national education curriculum, later helped lead the 2014 Umbrella Movement and co-founded Demosisto, a party arguing Hongkongers should determine their own political future. He has been behind bars since November 2020: first jailed over protest-related convictions, then sentenced to four years and eight months for subversion in the Hong Kong 47 case over an unofficial primary election, with release due in January 2027. But in June 2025, national security police arrested him inside Stanley Prison, where he was serving his sentence, on a new charge of conspiring to collude with foreign forces — his past international advocacy now forming the basis for a new sentence. This month he turns 30 in prison.
WHY IT MATTERS
Wong's case condenses the state of Hong Kong's democracy movement six years after the National Security Law: its leading figures are either behind bars or in exile, and the authorities have extended their targeting to the ties between people in exile and those in Hong Kong — Hui describes the message as chilling: cut every tie with those abroad or become the next target. Note: this record documents the verifiable public act — CIVICUS publishing the interview; Wong's convictions and sentences are public judicial records, but the interview's reading of the case's political motivations comes from the interviewee and the advocacy organisation, and has not been independently verified by this site — hence the 'under ongoing verification' grading.

The global civil society alliance CIVICUS has published an interview with exiled Hong Kong activist Frances Hui in its Lens section. Hui is policy and advocacy manager at the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation. The interview takes Joshua Wong's case as its entry point to discuss the state of Hong Kong's democracy movement under the National Security Law and the authorities' targeting of ties between people in exile and those in Hong Kong. [1]
Wong is one of the most recognisable faces of Hong Kong's democracy movement: at 14 he co-founded the student group Scholarism and led the 2012 movement against a China-backed national education curriculum; he went on to help lead the 2014 Umbrella Movement and co-founded Demosisto, a party arguing Hongkongers should determine their own political future. In October 2026 he turns 30 in prison; he has been behind bars since November 2020. [1]
Wong was first jailed over protest-related convictions, then sentenced to four years and eight months for subversion in the Hong Kong 47 case over an unofficial primary election. He was due for release in January 2027; but in June 2025, national security police arrested him inside Stanley Prison, where he was serving his sentence, on a new charge of conspiring to collude with foreign forces — his past international advocacy now forming the basis for a new sentence. [1]
Hui told CIVICUS that six years after the National Security Law, Hong Kong's democracy movement has been forced behind bars or into exile, and the authorities are targeting the ties between people in exile and those in Hong Kong. She described the message as chilling: cut every tie with those abroad or become the next target. Exiled activists are pressing states and international organisations to show support for Hong Kong's political prisoners. [1]
Verification note: this record documents the verifiable public act — CIVICUS publishing the interview on Wong's case. Wong's biography, convictions, sentences and the new charge are matters of public record; but the interview's judgments about the case's motivations and Hong Kong's overall situation come from the interviewee and the advocacy organisation, and have not been independently verified by this site. This site will continue to follow the judicial progress of Wong's new charge. [1]
